By the way…

One wonderful aspect of the Iyengar method of teaching yoga is the personalized instruction. B.K.S. Iyengar innovated the use of props (blocks, blankets, chairs, etc.) in yoga so that every person can achieve a sense of stability and freedom in every pose.

As you can see in the photo below, we have 4 variations of a common pose called “Downward Facing Dog” (or, adho mukha svanasana, in Sanskrit).
In every version, the student is using their arms and legs to lengthen the spine.
In every version, the student is creating more strength and flexibility in their shoulders and upper back, unraveling the effects of the many daily activities that negatively impact our posture (phones, computers, driving…).

1. Hands on the wall: Minimized pressure on the wrists. A great way to begin to stretch the backs of the legs, shoulders, and back muscles.

2. Hands on the chair seat: A slightly deeper version than hands on the wall.

3. Hands on the floor, feet on the floor: Classic version

4. Feet on the wall: An advanced version that is great preparation for a handstand (adho mukha vrksasana).

In classes designed for beginners, such as this series, I demonstrate each pose and then guide you into the pose. You will never feel lost or left behind. I also offer variations as needed so that you can practice in a way that is perfect for your unique strengths.

I can’t wait to meet you!

❤ Kim
